Yigal Amir\, a law student and a devoted Orthodox Jew\, cannot believe that his country’s leader will cede territory that he and many others believe is rightfully – by the word of God – theirs. \nAs the prospect of a peaceful compromise approaches\, Amir turns from a hot-headed political activist to a dangerous extremist\, consumed by anger and delusions of grandeur. He soon learns of an ancient Jewish law\, the Law of the Pursuer\, that he believes gives him the right to murder Yitzhak Rabin. Convinced he must stop the signing of the peace treaty in order to fulfill his destiny and bring salvation to his people\, Amir’s warped mind sees only one way forward. \n“A chilling portrait of how fanaticism can grow and be enabled…” Los Angeles Times \nAbout the Director \nYaron Zilberman is currently in post-production on an eight-episode drama series\, Valley of Tears about the 1973 Yom Kippur war. His film Incitement about the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin won the Israeli Film Academy Award\, the Ophir Prize\, for best picture 2019 and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Yaron also directed\, co-wrote\, and produced his internationally acclaimed A Late Quartet about a world-renowned New York based string quartet as its members struggle to stay together on the eve of their 25th anniversary\, starring Academy Award Winners Philip Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken. The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Yaron’s first film\, the award winning feature length documentary Watermarks was co-produced with HBO and ARTE. It tells the story of the champion women swimmers of the esteemed Jewish sports club Hakoah Vienna\, as they reunite in their 80s to swim together one more time in the city they were forced to escape 65 years earlier. \nAbout the Discussant \nProfessor Yoram Peri is the Abraham S. and Jack Kay Chair in Israel Studies\, and Director of the Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies\, the University of Maryland at College Park. SUMMARY:New Methods and Theories for Maritime Cultures from Israel Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The MGSDII is excited for an upcoming symposium pertaining to the project between University of California San Diego Scripps Center for Maritime Archaeology and the Department of Maritime Civilizations at the University of Haifa. \nScripps Center for Marine Archaeology and Colleagues – New Research in Israel\, Greece\, Puerto Rico and More \nMore details to be announced soon (by invitation only)! \nThe project: \nThis project (funded by the MGSDII) is a partnership between the newly established University of California San Diego Scripps Center for Maritime Archaeology and the Department of Maritime Civilizations at the University of Haifa. The goal: to investigate the impact of long-term climate change and rising sea levels on the cultures of the eastern Mediterranean – especially those along the coast of Israel. \nThe understanding of long-term climate change and human adaptation is key to understanding current climate change and rising sea levels. The coast of Israel has been home to cultures from prehistoric to modern times that have actively adapted to oscillating sea levels in a myriad of ways over the past 10\,000 years. These challenges are intricately linked to residence by the sea\, where nearby archaeological deposits and sediments provide a unique ‘archive’ of climatic and ecological data. The new information can be easily compared with Israel’s rich archaeological and historical record. Together\, these datasets can be used to model climate change in the greater Mediterranean basin. \nUsing the scientific strengths of both institutes\, this multi-disciplinary investigation uses a combination of underwater archaeology\, geoarchaeology\, geophysics\, maritime biology\, engineering and robotics to reconstruct the climatic history of the last 6\,000 years along the coast of Dor\, Israel. \nThe partnership\, headed by Prof. Tom Levy of UC San Diego and Prof. Assaf Yasur-Landau of Haifa\, aims at several related goals in the next year \n\nExpeditionary field work in September 2017\, which includes aerial drone and underwater 3D recording of submerged features at Dor\, mapping existing underwater reefs and establishing the scientific diving plan and logistics for the summer program.\nJoint UCSD-Haifa underwater archaeology field school (for college credit)\, including 12 students from Haifa and 12 students from UCSD at Tel Dor in July 2018 for one month. It will provide the students with advanced underwater techniques of archaeological work and environmental underwater sampling that the students will need to participate in the fieldwork and subsequent lab work.\nJune-September 2018: acquiring samples of sediment and rock by underwater drilling and coring\, and initial lab work on these samples in UCSD and Haifa.\nSeptember-November 2018: 3 Ph.D. students from Haifa arrive at UCSD to work on PhD research in Scripps Institution of Oceanography laboratories\, and 3 Ph.D. students from UC San Diego arrive at Haifa to work in the Haifa labs on archaeological data\, as well as on additional data acquisition for the project.\nPostdoctoral researcher from Israel takes up residence at UC San Diego to research marine archaeology data from this project.

SUMMARY:MGSDII to Host Israel Fulbright Reception at Leichtag Commons
DESCRIPTION:The MGSDII is proud to host the Fulbright Commission’s West Coast Alumni Reception for Fulbright alumni\, university faculty\, and key community stakeholders. \nThe history of the State of Israel is interwoven with the achievements of the Fulbright program\, which has produced one of the most important incubators for Israeli scientists and researchers since the 1950s. The Fulbright program opened the gates of Israeli academia to Americans who brought with them knowledge in various fields to the academic and scientific community in Israel. They have become one of the important channels for preserving the relationship between communities of knowledge in both countries. The Commission intends to continue to leverage this channel out of the belief that this will contribute to the strength of both countries and at the same time allow social mobility of Americans and Israelis from all walks of life. \nMore details to come! Please note that this is a private\, invitation-only event.
